Team Access
BI Pixie in Microsoft Fabric uses Microsoft Fabric workspace roles to manage who can create, configure, and view BI Pixie items. There is no separate BI Pixie team or member registry to maintain — anyone with access to your Fabric workspace and the BI Pixie item can act on it according to their workspace role.
If you are familiar with how access works for Power BI semantic models, lakehouses, or other Fabric items, BI Pixie items follow the same model.
For step-by-step instructions on adding people to a Fabric workspace, see Give users access to workspaces on Microsoft Learn.
Workspace Roles and What They Can Do in BI Pixie
Microsoft Fabric defines four workspace roles. The table below summarizes how each role maps to actions in a BI Pixie item.
| Fabric workspace role | What this role can do with BI Pixie |
|---|---|
| Admin | Full control. Can create BI Pixie items, add/update/remove Pixies on any report in the workspace, configure tracking settings, manage data retention, and delete the item. |
| Member | Same operational capabilities as Admin for the BI Pixie item: create the item, add Pixies, update reports, configure tracking, and access Data Management. |
| Contributor | Can create BI Pixie items and add Pixies to reports they have permission to edit in the workspace. Can configure tracking settings on the items they manage. |
| Viewer | Read-only. Can open a BI Pixie item that has been shared with them and view tracked reports, surveys, and dashboard outputs. Cannot add or modify Pixies, change settings, or delete data. |
In short: Admins, Members, and Contributors can manage BI Pixie items. Viewers have read-only access.
A Note on Role Granularity
BI Pixie itself does not introduce a separate "Admin vs. Member" distinction inside the BI Pixie item. The Fabric workspace role you hold is the one that applies. If your organization needs finer-grained separation — for example, "this person can add Pixies but cannot change retention" — model that by separating workspaces, or by using BI Pixie's Enterprise License Assignment to isolate data scopes per business unit.
Who Can Add BI Pixie
Workspace-level access is independent from tenant-level enablement. To make BI Pixie available in your tenant in the first place, a Fabric tenant administrator must add the workload — see Add BI Pixie to Your Tenant. Once added at the tenant level, any user with a permitted workspace role can create BI Pixie items in their workspaces.
Granting Access to a BI Pixie Item
Because BI Pixie items are Fabric items, you grant access exactly the same way you would grant access to any other Fabric item:
- Open the workspace that hosts the BI Pixie item.
- Use the workspace's Manage access control to add the user (or Microsoft Entra ID group) at the appropriate role: Admin, Member, Contributor, or Viewer.
- The user can now open the BI Pixie item from the workspace; their capabilities are determined by the role they hold.
